It’s been pretty snowy in Iowa this winter.
The kind of snow where the road disappears, the visibility drops, and you’re gripping the steering wheel a little tighter than usual.
You slow down. You lean forward. You do your best to stay in the lane.
You can’t see very far ahead. You just react to what shows up.
Running a business without numbers can feel exactly like that.
In the book Data: Harness Your Numbers to Go from Uncertain to Unstoppable, Angela, Mark, and I describe leading without clear measurables as “driving in a blinding snowstorm.” You’re moving forward, but you’re not sure what’s coming next.
Most leaders rely on gut instinct.
And to be fair, your instincts helped you build the business. They helped you make tough calls, take risks, and keep things moving.
But instinct alone doesn’t create visibility.
Data gives you a windshield.
When you start tracking the right numbers, the fog begins to lift. You can see patterns earlier. You can spot problems before they become surprises. You can see where your team is winning and where things need attention.
That’s where a weekly Scorecard comes in.
A simple Scorecard with 5–15 numbers gives you the pulse of the business every week. You review it with your leadership team, watch for trends, and treat it like an early warning system.
Not a report card.
A dashboard.
One page. Clear signals. Real visibility.
When the numbers go red, you don’t panic. You identify, discuss, and solve the issue before it turns into something bigger.
That’s when leadership gets easier.
You stop guessing.
You stop chasing fires.
You start steering with confidence.
Take a look at your current dashboard.
Do you have one?
Is it simple?
Does it truly give you the weekly pulse of your business?
If not, it might be time to build one you actually use.
Angela and I are hosting an upcoming Data Workshop where we’ll walk through how to create a Scorecard that gives you clarity, confidence, and control in your business.
