5 Questions to Know if Each Role Has a True Number

MARK STANLEY

If you are serious about strengthening the Data Component, one of the most important steps you can take is to make sure every person in your company has a true number.

true number creates clarity, accountability, and confidence. It tells you if someone is winning the week without emotion or debate.

As you build or refine your Scorecard, use these five questions to determine if each role has the right number.

1. What result is this role ultimately accountable for?

Focus on outcomes, not tasks. Tasks describe activity. Results describe impact. A true number measures the result that matters most.

2. What number tells you quickly if the person is winning or losing the week?

A great Measurable is a fast pulse check. You should know, at a glance, whether they need support, coaching, or recognition.

3. Does this number directly support your larger company Measurables?

A strong Scorecard aligns from top to bottom. Each individual measurable should support the department scorecard and the leadership scorecard. When everything aligns, you get better traction.

4. Does the person clearly understand that they own this number?

Ownership is everything. If a number belongs to a group, it gets lost. If it belongs to one person, it gets managed. Make sure the person confidently says, “Yes, that’s mine.”

5. Would this number still matter if the business or tools changed?

A true number is timeless. It reflects the essential outcome of the role, even if processes or technology evolve.
